        "description": "Proliferations of strategic interplay among manufacturing firms threaten the\nsustainability of fast-moving consumer goods in Kenya. In realization of vision 2030,\nmanufacturing was envisaged as a core area in job creation and poverty eradication.\nUnfortunately, previous statistics showed that there has been a downward trend on\nperformance of manufactured fast moving consumer goods in Kenya. It is in this regard\nthat this study sought to determine the influence of product life cycle extension\nstrategies, market-based policies and customer loyalty on performance of fast-moving\nconsumer goods firms in Kenya. The study was anchored on three theories namely;\ngame theory that was used to model the study, marketing mix theory and economic\ntheory of regulation from which the variables were derived. The study adopted\npragmatism research philosophy and cross-sectional research design. Through census,\nstudy population was 193 fast moving consumer goods firms. Secondary data was\ncollected using questionnaires and data collection schedules for the period covering\n2017-2021 for 161 firms since 32 did not respond to the questionnaires hence expunged\nfrom the study. Data was analyzed using multiple linear regression models. Study found\nthat repositioning, promotion, price adjustment and rebranding strategies had positive\nand significant effect on performance of fast-moving consumer goods firms in Kenya.\nSecondly, the study established that market-based policies had a negative and significant\nmoderating effect on the relationship between product life cycle extension strategies and\nperformance of fast-moving consumer goods firms in Kenya. Lastly, the results\nindicated that customer loyalty had positive and significant mediating effect on the\nrelationship between product life cycle extension strategies and performance of fastmoving consumer goods firms in Kenya with evidence of partial mediation. The study\nconcluded that adoption of PLC extension strategies namely repositioning, promotion,\nprice adjustment and rebranding strategies were important in enhancing performance of\nFMCG firms in Kenya. The study further concluded that market-based policy led to poor\nperformance while adopting product life cycle extension strategies played an important\nrole in enhancing customer loyalty which would lead to improved performance. The\nstudy recommends that senior management staff of the firms should embrace and\nenhance implementation of the four PLC extension strategies for prolonged profit\nreaping. In addition, management should improve the current implementation\napproaches of PLC extension strategies as a whole so as to enhance customer loyalty\nthat will lead to high rate of repeat and referral customers. Further, the study\nrecommends that relevant Kenyan Government authorities and policy makers reconsider\nand revise current market-based policies regarding input tariffs on fast moving consumer\ngoods so as to improve performance. The study contributes to the existing body of\nknowledge in this area."

        "description": "This study was carried out with the broad objective of assessing the potential for control of Bacterial Blight of Coffee (BBC) using foliar fertilizer applications to Inhibit Ice Nucleation Activity (INA) of the causative agent (Pseudomonas syringae pv. garcae). Bacteria isolates from four coffee growing areas in Kenya were characterized based on visual, biochemical, physiological and pathogenicity characteristics to distinguish the pathogenic isolates of P. syringae from other phylloplane epiphytic bacteria. Isolates of bacteria from diseased coffee plants were categorised in three groups. Isolates that were pathogenic to coffee and produced typical symptoms of BBC fell under group 1 and were assumed to be of P. syringae pv. garcae. Other isolates that fell under groups 2 and 3 were considered to be saprophytic epiphytes. Four commercially available fertilizer formulations; Bayfolan™, Mboleasafi™, Farmphoska™ and Farmfoliar™ were tested on four pathogenic bacteria isolates collected from the four regions. All formulations significantly (p\u003c0.05) reduced the number of bacterial colony forming units. Bayfolan™ treatment had the highest bacterial growth inhibition potential while Farmfoliar™ was least inhibitive. All the isolates were Ice Nucleation Active (INA+) and all the fertilizer formulations were potentially capable of suppressing the bacterial ice nucleation activity with Farmphoska™ being the most suppressive. Findings presented in this report indicate a potential for the management of BBC using foliar fertilizers to suppress the bacterial INA."

        "description": "This paper uses Nancy Fraser�s concept of participatory parity to reflect on data gathered by and from third year students in a final year research module in the Women�s and Gender Studies Department at the University of the Western Cape in 2015. During the course students developed a research proposal, collected and shared data with other students, and then used this data to write a final (externally examinable) research report. Employing a participatory photovoice methodology, the students� research focused on ways in which social and group identities had shaped their experiences of feeling empowered and disempowered on campus. Each student took two photos representing experiences of feeling empowered and two of feeling disempowered on campus and wrote narratives of about 300 words explaining and describing the experience foregrounded by each image. Students shared these narratives and accompanying images with each other, their teachers and the wider university community through a public exhibition in the library. In the paper we draw on Fraser�s concepts of maldistribution, misrecognition and misrepresentation to highlight constraints to equal participation identified by students."

        "description": "The literature on financial inclusion (FI) and poverty connections has received considerable attention, but there exists a scarcity of South African studies examining the relationship between FI and poverty. This study fills this research gap by analysing the 2011 and 2016 FinScope data. Principal Components Analysis was applied to consider indicators from four FI dimensions (access, usage, quality and welfare) to derive a financial inclusion index (FII), before the relative approach was used to distinguish the financially included and excluded individuals separately. The empirical findings indicated that lowly educated Africans residing in the rural areas of Eastern Cape, Free State and Limpopo provinces were associated with a greater likelihood of being financially excluded, whereas individuals coming from the lower FII quintiles suffered greater money-metric poverty likelihood. Lastly, the proportion of people who were both money-metric poor and financially excluded declined from 19.5% to 15.4% between 2011 and 2016."

        "description": "The crustose coralline alga Spongites yendoi (Foslie) Chamberlain (Corallinaceae, Rhodophyta) dominates the lower eulittoral zone along the South Coast of South Africa, together with the limpet Patella cochlear Born. This coralline alga was previously shown to undergo a deep-layer sloughing twice a year, as well as continuous epithallial sloughing. The hypothesis that deep-layer sloughing could perform an antifouling function was tested by determining the percentage cover of fleshy algae developing in a limpet exclusion experiment on live and killed coralline. Substantial fleshy algal cover developed in both limpet removal treatments, negating any possible antifouling function of deep-layer sloughing. A measurable decrease in the mean thickness of the coralline population was noted during periods of sloughing. A thicker crustose coralline, Leptophytum ferox (Foslie) Chamberlain \u0026 Keats, grew more slowly and was much more heavily burrowed and more weakly attached than S. yendoi. These results are consistent with a hypothesis that deep-layer sloughing contributes to the alga's relatively thin thallus, thereby conferring the advantages of faster growth and stronger attachment. However, further studies are still needed to evaluate these hypotheses further."

        "description": "The objectives of this study were to evaluate the fish farmers and feed millers in the study areas to determine their coping strategies, the types of feeds they use, the ingredients in their formulations, the sources of the ingredients, and any other relevant information that could aid in the scaling of sustainable local ingredients and feeds. Questionnaires were administered in Local Government Areas (LGAs) in 22 States and the FCT cutting across the 6 geopolitical zones (North Central (NC), North-East (NE), North-West (NW), South-East (SE), South-South (SS) and South-West (SW)) of Nigeria from June to December 2023 to obtain information on activities of the feed millers and fish farmers in respect of the use of local ingredients from 2018 – 2022 to improve local feed production, reduce cost and support sustainable aquaculture development. A total of 459 structured questionnaires were administered to 130 feed millers and 329 fish farmers. Majority (65%) of the feed millers produced less than 5 tons per day in all the geopolitical zones across all business age categories (\u003c5 years, 5-10 years and \u003e10 years). Feed sizes of 2mm, 3mm, 4mm, 6mm, 8mm and above were produced at different capacity in all geopolitical zones. The lowest selling price of ₦540 per kg of feed was recorded in the south- west zone while the highest value of ₦1,599.36 was recorded in the South-East zone. Fish farmers in the South-West region have the highest fish production capacity, with 21.28% producing over 1000kg/year, while those in the South-South region have the lowest, with only 0.91% producing between 100-1000kg/year. 78% of fish farmers operate full-time, while only 22% do it part time. Most farmers (47%) use earthen ponds, followed by 24% who use concrete ponds. Some utilize both types, and a few make use of all available facilities. Fish farming and feed milling business can thrive well in Nigeria if favourable factors are considered."
